Gladys V. Miller, age 96, formerly of West Creek Road and most recently of the Guy & Mary Felt Manor in Emporium, died Monday, March 30, 2015, in Penn Highlands ElkMedical Center, St. Marys.


Born June 1, 1918 in Emporium, she was the daughter of J. Fred and Violet Barr Ostrum.  On August 9, 1941 in the First Baptist Church in Emporium she married Harlan (Jim) Miller who died September 5, 1999.


A resident of Emporium her entire life, she attended Plank Road Hollow School.  For 34 years she was employed by GTE Sylvania in Emporium before retiring on June 16, 1978.


Mrs. Miller was a member of the First Baptist Church of Emporium, the Emporium SeniorCenter, and the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club.  After retiring she did a lot of volunteer work, driving people to doctor appointments and delivering Meals on Wheels.  She was also a lifelong blood donor and was the top donor in Cameron County for many years having donated over 26 gallons.


Survivors include: two children, Fred I. (Mary) Miller of Clearfield and Donna M. (Gary) House of Victor, NY; six grandchildren, Jean and Melissa Miller and Bethany (Derryck) Cromwell and Michael and Matthew (Karrie) House and Melanie (Zdenek) Chumacero; five great grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth Ostrum of Emporium; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister Rose Griffith and four brothers, Samuel, Keith, Melvin (Flash), and Robert Ostrum.


Friends will be received from 4 - 7 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2015 in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium where Funeral and Committal Services will be held at 11 a.m.Saturday, with the Rev. Andy Johnson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.


Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.


Memorials, if desired, may be made to the First Baptist Church, the Emporium Senior Center, Guy and Marry Felt Manor, or if you are able, please donate blood.



Faithful servant, Clara Margaret (Ernest) Pernick, 93 years old, daughter of John Paul Ernest and Mary Bridge, wife of John
Pernick Sr, joined her family in heaven on March 20, 2015.


Clara is preceeded in death by her parents, husband John, sister Mary and brothers
Joe, John, Len, Arthur and Tom.  Her surviving children Sandra Rhodes, John and wife Joan Pernick, and Susan Pernick, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends will miss her kind soul dearly. 

Born in Punxsutawney, PA July 17,1921 and a graduate of Sts. Cosmas and Damian High School there, Clara lived for many years in Cleveland, OH and Sinnemahoning, PA. 

A mass will be said at St Mark's Catholic Church in Emporium following a burial at Gilmore Cemetery in Austin, PA at a date to later be announced.





David L. "Butch" Caton, 72, of 229 W. 5th St., Emporium, PA died at his residence on Tuesday (March 17, 2015) morning.


He was born February 15, 1943 in Emporium, PA a son of the late Earl and Ruth Finn Caton. He married Regina Minard Caton, who survives Mr. Caton graduated from Cameron County High School and then served with the US Navy for over four years. He had been a longtime member of the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368, Emporium, Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW and the American Legion Olkosky-Jessop Post 194, Emporium. Butch enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and playing cribbage with his family.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday (March 21, 2015) at 1:30 PM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, St. Mark Catholic Church, officiating.


 Visitation will be at the Funeral Home on Saturday, one hour prior to the Service.


 Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Dorothy J. Akins, 90, of 1429 Sizer Run Rd., Emporium, PA died at Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport on Friday, (March 13, 2015) morning.


She was born January 23, 1925 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late David R. and Mary Alice Wells Bennett. She married Charles Akins, who survives Dorothy will be remembered by her family and friends for her sincere compassion to the hurting and needy in society. She enjoyed gardening, was highly skilled at knitting and crocheting, and loved to nurture the local hummingbirds.

Funeral Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (March 16, 2015) at 4:00 PM with Rev. James Eastman, Pastor, Deeper Waters Ministries, officiating.


Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Monday, one hour prior to the service. 

Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Ted A. Whiting, 74, of 40 W. 5th Street, Emporium, PA died at Penn Highlands DuBois on Saturday(February 28, 2015) morning.

He was born June 4, 1940 in Sterling Run, PA a son of the late Beryl Hazen.
On June 30, 1967 in St. Marks Catholic Church he married Mary Richey Zito Whiting, who survives.

Ted was raised by his grandparents the late Harry & Grace Whiting. He graduated from Emporium High School and served his county with the US Air Force for over 10 years. Ted retired from GKN where he worked for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Emporium Fire Department where he served as fire police. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
